Overview:

The symposium is one of the special events to celebrate the tenth-year anniversary of GSICCS (Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies). The event is co-sponsored by SILS (School of Liberal International Studies), GSAPS (Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies) and WIAPS (Research Center of Asia-Pacific Studies), and supported by FIRE (Faculty of International Research and Education).

The symposium will have two sessions.

The first session is comprised of two keynote speeches by Professors Oi and Walder. Focusing on the recent development in China, Walder’s talk examines the institutional foundation of excessive economic inequality in the reform era, whereas Oi’s talk explores China’s public debt problems exacerbated by a weakened real estate market and the zero-COVID policy. The session, entitled China’s Political Economy: Institutional Weakness and Financial Challenges, also features leading Waseda experts on Chinese politics and economy: Professors Rumi Aoyama, Liang Tang, Saang Joon Baak, and Taisaku Ikeshima.

In the second session, Professors Oi and Walder will join a roundtable discussion on Asian studies. Under the theme of Asian studies: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities, the session explores the development of methodology (humanity approaches vs. social science methods), area studies (single-country study vs. crosscountry analysis), as well as the research fieldwork and academic contribution of Asian studies. The Waseda participants include Professors Seio Nakajima (cultural sociology), Min Shu (International Political Economy), Yuji Uesugi (Peace building), Takeshi Daimon-Sato (development economics) and Gracia Liu-Farrer (labor and migration).

Profile:

Professor Jean Oi is the William Haas Professor of Chinese politics at Department of Political Science, Stanford University. She is the founding Director of the Stanford China Program at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. In 2023-2024, Professor Oi is the elected President of AAS (Association for Asian Studies), the largest academic association of Asian studies in the world. Professor Andrew Walder is the Denise O’Leary and Kent Thiry Professor at Department of Sociology, Stanford University. Previously, he taught at Columbia and Harvard Universities. Widely recognized for his research on communist countries (esp. China), Professor Walder was elected as a fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2012.
