①Minami Sakurai (Graduated from Sciences Po in June 2024)

It was absolutely an eye-opening 2 years in Paris where I majored in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action, along with a thematic concentration in migration studies at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA). Classes at Sciences Po were all very challenging and interactive, which was critical for me to truly acquire the knowledge and practical skills to be prepared for the opportunities that lie ahead and to reinforce my passion for humanitarian action.

During my internship semester, I had the honor of working in the Emergency Cell at the Paris headquarters of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), where I was able to assist in deploying staff to missions in disaster-affected areas and conflict zones such as in Morocco, Libya, Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza.  This experience taught me the significance of international organizations and the contribution that humanitarian workers could bring to the field.

For Sciences Po’s traditional final oral exam (Grand Oral), I analyzed the role of NGOs and effective measures that the global humanitarian system could take to mitigate and prevent sexual exploitation and abuse perpetrated by humanitarian workers.

Looking back at the two years, many brilliant professors and practitioners but also the curriculum at PSIA equipped me with a thorough understanding of the intricate challenges in humanitarian affairs. I am now looking for new opportunities to apply my skills in the field of human rights and humanitarian action.

It has been an incredibly fruitful opportunity and I would like to extend my sincere thanks for this amazing journey in Paris. I am certain that this program will provide you with as many great experiences as I have had over the past two years and I hope many of you will give this program a try for a challenging learning experience in Paris.

②Maki Katsube (Graduated from Sciences Po in June 2024)

My time at Sciences Po through the 5BM program was undoubtedly a turning point in my life. Over these two years, I discovered the value of stepping off the beaten path and the importance of having confidence in oneself. In particular, the experience of working in Paris during the internship semester significantly broadened my horizons, revealing numerous possibilities for my future career and allowing me to further explore my potential. Meeting extraordinary colleagues who eagerly listened to my ideas and incorporated them, and engaging in inspiring work at an international organization, are among my most unforgettable memories.

Before going to Paris, the idea of working abroad had never crossed my mind. However, through my studies at Sciences Po and conversations with remarkable professors and friends, I realized how much I still had to learn and how much room there is for me to grow. They taught me the importance of not underestimating oneself and taking action without jumping to conclusions. Now that I have graduated, although my plans are not yet set in stone, I intend to remain in France to challenge myself and truly pursue work that interests me. My current plan is to work at an international organization where I can analyze individual data from various countries to enhance transparency on a global level.

Dear Future Applicant,

As you embark on the journey of applying to this esteemed programme, I trust that you already have a deep appreciation for the academic excellence, reputation, and robust alumni network that Sciences Po offers. These qualities undoubtedly contribute to the appeal of the 5BM programme. As a recent graduate currently interning at UNEP and having just received a PhD offer from NUS, I would like to share how Sciences Po has significantly influenced and shaped my personal and academic development.

Much like SILS, PSIA embraces a multidisciplinary educational approach. During my time as a student in International Economic Policy, I had the opportunity to broaden my scientific knowledge through courses such as “Ocean, Earth, and Climate Change.” This course deepened my understanding of crucial concepts like ocean dynamics, the Earth’s energy budget, and tipping points, ultimately guiding my research interest to transition from Development Economics to Environmental Economics. Beyond the coursework, the third-semester internship or thesis track provides unparalleled training opportunities, equipping students for both professional and academic careers. This approach has been instrumental in helping me discover my research and career interests while fostering a multidisciplinary perspective.

Moreover, PSIA offers comprehensive research training, equipping students with practical tools like Zotero, LaTeX, and data visualization techniques, alongside advanced theoretical training, such as panel and time-series analysis and integrated assessment models. This rigorous training was instrumental in enabling me to conduct independent research, draft research proposals, and prepare my PhD application.

I hope my experience provides you with insight into the impact Sciences Po can have on your academic and professional journey. Best of luck with your application—this is an opportunity that could shape your future in ways you might not yet imagine.
