History

Establishment and Outline

The School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) is Waseda University’s flagship school for the globally minded. SILS was founded in 2004 in an ambitious attempt to break the mold.

Unlike most universities in Japan at the time, SILS conducted its classes in English, actively welcomed international students, and made it mandatory for students whose mother tongue is Japanese to study abroad.

In 2013, the program “ASEAN International Mobility for Students Programme +7 ”, has begun.

In 2017, we have had an agreement with Paris —- 5BM Programme

Now, over ten years later, third of SILS students are from outside Japan, and these international students represent around 50 countries and regions in Asia and also in the West and Africa, etc. Likewise, SILS has a multinational and globally fluent faculty. In this way, SILS offers a multicultural and multilingual community that is a veritable microcosm of the world at large. In this community, you will encounter many different personalities, values, and ideas, allowing you to broaden your horizons.
