Gifu Yaotsu City

Yaotsu Town, Gifu Prefecture

Purpose

During World War II, Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara (1900-1986) is known for issuing transit visas to pass through Japan to Jews and others fleeing persecution from various parts of Europe under Nazi Germany, saving the lives of approximately 6,000 refugees. He was born in Yaotsu, Gifu Prefecture, and our university is also known as his alma mater.

In 2016, Yaotsu Town requested cultural exchange through music, and since then, Waseda students have been holding concerts in the town. On the day before the concert, the students also visit a junior high school in the town and engage in singing exchanges with the students.
