Self-introduction
Hi everyone! I’m Yuichi Suzuki, an Associate Professor at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) and the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies (GSICCS) at Waseda University.
I specialize in Applied Linguistics and Language Education. Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field, aiming to solve real-world language problems through evidence-based approaches. My research focuses on second language acquisition (SLA)—how people learn additional languages after their first language. Having learned English in Japanese classrooms before pursuing doctoral studies in the United States, I am interested in understanding second language learning mechanisms in diverse educational contexts and improving English education in Japan.
Recent Research Interests
My research bridges the gap between Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research and language education practice. I investigate the mechanisms of foreign language acquisition, effective teaching and learning methods, and individual differences in language learning. Drawing on insights from SLA, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, I study language learning and teaching in diverse educational contexts. I collaborate with teachers on English education projects in Japan, where research insights inform practice and classroom experiences in turn shape research directions. Through this integration of research and practice, my recent work aims to contribute to more effective language education for both learners and teachers.
Profile
I earned my Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Maryland, College Park, after completing a Master’s degree in English Education at Tokyo Gakugei University. I serve on the editorial boards of leading journals in the field, including Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Research, TESOL Quarterly, Applied Psycholinguistics, and Research Methods in Applied Linguistics. I have published journal articles and books in both Japanese and English, including『あたらしい第二言語習得論』(研究社),『英語学習の科学』(研究社),『高校英語授業における文法指導を考える』(ALC Press), and Practice and Automatization in Second Language Research: Perspectives from Skill Acquisition Theory and Cognitive Psychology (Routledge).
