【Message from Graduates】YANG, Ting-Ting : Pursuing Career in Medical Field after Graduation

  • National Kaohsiung Normal University Affiliated Senior High School (Graduated in June 2008)
  • School of International Liberal Studies, Waseda University (Graduated in March 2012)
  • Works at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital/ Pingtung Hospital

After graduating from SILS, I decided to enter medical school in my hometown (Kaohsiung Medical University). Currently, I am a board-certified dermatologist working at a university hospital and its affiliated community hospital. My work involves patient care, research, and teaching young residents, which I all enjoy a lot.

The curriculum provided at SILS seems to have little connection with the field of medicine. However, my experience at SILS had prepared me for the daily challenges as a physician. While at SILS, I had the opportunity to freely explore various fields of studies and meet people from all kinds of backgrounds. The activities and events at Waseda were also great opportunities to connect with people and understand different cultures. These experiences have equipped me with a broadened vision of the world and improved communication skills. These skills are important as medicine is not all science but also art. Patient care not only involves expertise in medical knowledge but also requires a background in the humanities and other sciences, as the patients we care for are humans from diverse backgrounds.

No matter which field you decide to go into, these fundamental skills and the open mind-set from SILS will always make you well prepared.
