Alumni donations support learning for the future

Donations from alumni support education for the future of orphaned children in Africa.
Waseda University establishes a new scholarship to support orphans' advancement to higher education.

Waseda University Corporation (Waseda University, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Aiji Tanaka; hereinafter referred to as "the University") will establish a new scholarship program, the Ashinaga Foundation AAI Scholarship, for orphans in African countries from October 2025.

This program is aimed at students who have entered our university through the Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI), run by the Ashinaga Foundation.

A portion of the scholarship funding will come from the Waseda University Fund, which was established by the university to support educational and research activities. This fund is made up of donations from Waseda alumni and others, and this scholarship program will be realized in accordance with the will of the donors.

Through this system, we will provide strong support to young people in Africa who are not fortunate enough to have access to an education, so that they can take great strides towards achieving independence and realizing their dreams.

About AAI (Ashinaga Africa Orphans Higher Education Support 100 Year Initiative)

AAI is an international program for orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa, helping them obtain degrees at universities around the world and cultivating leaders. Every year, outstanding orphans are selected from each country, and after a preparatory period, the selected students advance to universities in Japan, the United States, and other countries. While studying abroad, they develop practical leadership skills through internships and projects, and are expected to contribute to society in their home countries after graduation. With a long-term vision through the next 100 years, the program aims to cultivate people of high aptitude who will support the sustainable development of Africa.

About the Waseda University Fund

The Waseda University Fund was established with the aim of enhancing educational and research activities and nurturing students. We widely solicit support from many people, including alumni, so that current students, who will carry the future of the university, can study in a better environment. Donations received are accumulated as a fund, and through investment gains, are used to support the university's educational and research activities in a long-term and stable manner. This fund is supported by the cooperation of many people as an important bridge connecting Waseda's traditions and future.
