Challenges and growth for the
most fulfilled international
student in Japan @ UCLA
I chose UCLA in Los Angeles, US, as my study abroad destination since I wanted to immerse myself in an environment where international students and immigrants from all over the world gather and diverse cultures are accepted.
While staying there, I took classes related to the history of diversity, such as gender and race, and gained new knowledge through discussions with students from various backgrounds.
In addition to my studies, I was also a member of five student organizations. In particular, my volunteer activities took me behind the glamorous world of Hollywood to clean up and provide material support in one of Los Angeles’ most prominent slums. There, I was able to experience firsthand the front lines of social inequality that cannot be seen on campus. In a cross-cultural exchange club, I served hand-rolled sushi and origami to 40 people and tried to have opportunities not only to absorb other cultures but also to introduce my own culture.
Through these experiences, I am convinced that my four-year student life has become more intense as I have learned once again that the challenge of continually facing new goals leads to the broadening of one’s own sense of values.
