Developing Critical Thinking Skills through the Concentration Program

I applied for a place at SILS because I liked how you can graduate with or without a Concentration. Before I entered university I was interested in a variety of fields, and I was not confident that I would be able to choose a Concentration in my 4 years. To my surprise, in my second semester at SILS, I realised that I enjoyed courses in Linguistics more than any other course and thus quickly enrolled in the Linguistics Concentration. SILS offers Linguistics courses in several areas, so I was able to take classes in Phonetics and Phonology, Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Syntax, but I particularly enjoyed studying Sociolinguistics- the study of the relationship between language and society. By gradually taking increasingly challenging classes in the field of Linguistics, I feel like I gained the background knowledge needed to start to think about the ideas discussed in class critically. I believe that the critical thinking skills that one can gain from completing a Concentration can be really useful even after graduation, and I thus strongly recommend the program.
