【Introduction of New Faculty Member】TSUKADA, Yuichi, Associate Professor

Self-Introduction

I am Dr Yuichi Tsukada. I specialise in English literature and culture, particularly Shakespeare’s drama. I received my BA and MA from the University of Tokyo and my PhD (English Language and Literature) from King’s College London, UK.

My first book, Shakespeare and the Politics of Nostalgia (London; New York: Arden Shakespeare, 2019), the first monograph by a Japanese researcher to be published in the internationally renowned Arden Shakespeare series, received international recognition, garnering positive reviews from international academic journals such as Studies in English Literature, 1500–1900, Renaissance Quarterly and Theatre Journal. Furthermore, the book has been cited not only in literary studies but also in history, cultural history and representation studies, illustrating the interdisciplinary nature of my research. Following its publication, a paperback edition was released in 2020, making my research more accessible to undergraduate and postgraduate students worldwide.

I have always been deeply committed to the value of liberal arts education. My academic background, which includes undergraduate studies in liberal arts at the University of Tokyo’s College of Arts and Sciences, has significantly contributed to my career as a researcher and educator. Throughout my career, I have consistently highlighted the importance of liberal arts in fostering a nuanced understanding of complex social and cultural issues. I am therefore absolutely delighted to be teaching at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) and the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies (GSICCS), where I can share this passion with my students and colleagues. I very much look forward to guiding my students in exploring the richness and complexity of English literary works as well as the richness and complexity of the world they invite us to see.

Recent Research Interest

My ongoing project involves editing a book on marginalised English authors, featuring contributions from international scholars. I am also working on my second book-length research project entitled “Shakespeare and the Poetics of Visual Adaptations.” While my earlier publications focused on the intricate relationship between theatre and the social context of early modern England, I am now also exploring how adaptations of his drama reflect and interact with society and culture beyond national, temporal and linguistic boundaries.

From my research on the effects of nostalgia for Queen Elizabeth I on contemporary literature and culture to my ongoing exploration of Shakespearean adaptations in visual media, I have aimed to illuminate the exciting links between literature and society, contributing to studies of English literature, culture and history and to studies of adaptations. I feel blessed to conduct my research at SILS and GSICCS and to contribute to interdisciplinary dialogues between Waseda University and the worldwide academic community.
