Reference Services

For Waseda users only

Library staff are available for consultations about book searches and library services.
Please visit the Reference Desk at each library if you are unable to locate books and other materials, or if you are unsure how to search for library materials.

Inquiries can also be made online. You can choose one of the following.

  • Email reference
    Responses to inquiries are sent by email.
  • Online reference service on Zoom
    We will explain and answer your questions through direct conversation via Zoom. This is recommended for those who do not know how to operate various systems, since the actual operation can be confirmed by sharing the screen.

This service is available for full-time faculty, part-time lecturers, research associates, graduate and undergraduate students at Waseda University.

How to Inquire

Please send your inquiry by clicking on [Research*] in the MyWaseda, and then clicking on [Library online request].

  • Date & Time 
    11 a.m. -5 p.m. Mon.-Fri. (JST, only on weekdays) *Reservation required.
  • How to apply
    1) Login to MyWaseda
    2) Click “Research” (“Tasks” for Staff) tag on the top of the screen, then click “Library Online Request” on the right side.
    3) You don’t need to describe your question in details on the request form. But please list possible dates and times in a note column on the bottom of the page.
    4) You will receive an e-mail says an appointment time and Zoom address to login, from the library.
    5) Please join Zoom when the time comes.
  • Others
    ・Zoom reference is generally limited to 30 minutes per session.
    ・We recommend using a PC or other device with a large screen, as we may share the screen.
    ・Please apply by 5:00 p.m. on the day before your preferred day (except weekends and holidays).
    ・If it would take time for research, your reference might be changed to a regular online reference (not by Zoom).
  • Contact

    ・Please include your school name, school year, or job title, as well as your full name and contact information (email) in your inquiry.

Inquiry Topics

  • Searches for books and other materials
    Support is provided to library users who are not familiar with necessary search or inquiry methods.
  • Research assistance
    Research assistance is provided to library users who wish to find information on a particular issue or person, but are not familiar with research methods.
  • Use of search tools
    Please consult with library staff if you do not understand how to use Waseda library catalog system (WINE) or other databases.
  • Use of Waseda libraries
    User services may differ by libraries depending on a user’s status at Waseda. When the special procedures like the issuance of the introduction letter are necessary, please consult with the library staff.
  • Use of non-Waseda libraries
    In principle, a letter of introduction is required to visit non-Waseda libraries. Please submit applications for the letter of introduction beforehand at the Reference Desk. Online requests are also accepted.
  • Interlibrary loans
    You can request books and other materials from both Waseda and non-Waseda libraries.Online requests are also accepted.
  • Purchase requests
    Purchase requests are accepted for books and other materials not owned by the university. Online requests are also accepted.
  • Books in ” PROCESS”
    Requests can be made to use books that are shown as “PROCESS” in WINE. Online requests are also accepted.

The inquiry which the library cannot accept

Waseda University Library cannot provide guidance or information with respect to the following inquiries and requests:

  1. Research for finding answers to assignments, study reports.
  2. Research and investigation on behalf of others.
  3. Compiling a systematic bibliography.
  4. Deciphering, annotation, translation and excerption of a document.
  5. Consultation on personal, legal, medical and pharmaceutical matters.
  6. Search of materials, articles, etc. that are inaccessible by ordinary search methods.
  7. The inquiry which is deemed as exceeding the range of the reference.
