Using non-Waseda Libraries

For Waseda users only

If the books or materials you wish to use are not available at the Waseda University Library, you may visit libraries at other universities and research institutes, or you may request for materials through Interlibrary Loans (ILL). For libraries with cooperative agreements, services may differ from other libraries. Please refer to the following pages for further information.

In this a web page, you will get information about mainly how to visit non-Waseda libraries with a letter of introduction, and how to use libraries which has Cooperative agreements with Waseda University Library.

A Letter of Introduction for visiting non-Waseda Libraries

When visiting a library that is not open to the general public, a letter of introduction issued from Waseda University Library may be required.

Before applying for a letter of introduction, please check the Waseda’s holdings  very carefully. In addition, please search well and identify the materials using OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) of the library.

Then, please check the library information for visitors and the library calendar  on the website, etc.. You may be required to present your Waseda ID Card (Faculty ID or Student ID) with a letter of introduction, also an advance notice to the library may be required.

*Public libraries, National Diet Library and some national/public university libraries are open to every user. In these cases, a letter of introduction may not be required.
*Waseda faculty&staff and students can use libraries which has Cooperative agreements with Waseda University Library using your Waseda ID Card (Conditions differ by each agreement).

User Qualification

  • Waseda University ID Card holder (Faculty & Staff, Undergraduate students, Graduate students etc.)
  • Library Card holder (Green)

How to Request

Please request from “Library online request” via MyWaseda. If you cannot use “Library online request”, you can submit an application after consulting with the Reference Desk at Central Library, Science and Engineering Library, and Tokorozawa Library.

Notes

  • To apply this service, you need to prepare following matters.
    – Name of the library/institution  you wish to visit
    – Preferred date for visiting ( At least the third choice)
    – Bibliographic information such as title, author’s name, call number to identify the materials you want to use.
    – Citation information which you have confirmed the holdings.
  • It might take approximately 1 week to issue the introduction letter, for we have to ask for the visiting library’s prior permission on your visit and use of the materials. Please refrain from choosing “Today” or “Tomorrow” as your preferred date.
  • Please consult the Reference Desk if it is hard to type non-alphabetic characters like Cyrillic or Arabic in “Library online request” form, or if you are required to submit a special form in advance from the library you wish to use.
  • When you use non-Waseda libraries, please make sure to bring your Waseda ID card with the letter of introduction.

Using non-Waseda Libraries with Cooperative agreements

Waseda University Library has been having a cooperative agreement with Keio University Library since 1986. You can receive faster and free shipping services on Interlibrary Loan between Waseda and Keio under this agreement.

Full-time faculty & staff, Professor emeritus

  • Use of Library:
    Full-time faculty and staff: You can enter the library by holding your Waseda ID card of faculty and staff over the entrance gate. Registration is required for the first time.
    *There are some campuses that are exceptions. For more information, “Available libraries of Keio University”.
    Professor emeritus: Please show your Waseda ID card of professor emeritus to the staff at the entrance and take the procedure.
  • Borrowing by Individuals:
    Upon submission of faculty/staff/professor emeritus ID, applicants can receive a library use ticket issued for the Mita Media Center (usable throughout the fiscal year).【Trial start】 (Added on March 13, 2024)
    From April 1, 2024, full-time faculty and staff, and professor emeritus can borrow books of Keio University by following ways.
    1. Picking up books at Waseda University Library (personal borrowing request)
    2. Visiting Keio University (admission and borrowing)Please see this page for details.

  • Use of Library:
    You can enter the library by holding your Student ID card of over the entrance gate. Registration is required for the first time.

  • The Mita Media Center
  • The Hiyoshi Media Center
    * Full-time faculty and staff can use Hiyoshi Depository with their ID cards. Others need to consult librarians of Waseda University beforehand and will be able to use items in Hiyoshi Depository at Hiyoshi Media Center.

  • The Information and Media Center for Science and Technology * Please show your Waseda ID card to the staff at the entrance and take the procedure.

  • The Keio Collaboration Complex Library *Prior contact and a letter of introduction are required from Waseda University Library.
  • The Library of Nursing and Medical Care *A letter of introduction is required from Waseda University Library.

Waseda University Library has been having a cooperative agreement with Doshisha University Library since 2001.

    Presentation of faculty/staff/professor emeritus ID Card
  • Borrowing by Individuals:
    Upon submission of faculty/staff, applicants can receive a library use ticket issued for the Imadegawa and Kyotanabe campuses (usable throughout the fiscal year).
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL):
    Document copy services are available for a low fee. (Black and white 20 yen / par a page, Color 60 yen / par a page)

Available libraries of Doshisha University

  • The Doshisha University Library (Imadegawa Campus)
  • The Learned Memorial Library (Kyotanabe Campus)
    * Weekends and national holidays are not available.

Waseda University Library has been having a cooperative agreement with Hitotsubashi University Library since 2004.

The Hitotsubashi University has made their library and resource rooms available to the public. However, there are limitations on the terms of use for public users. When using the library under the conditions specified in the cooperative agreement, please submit your student/faculty/staff ID.

    * Separate fee is required for requests for copy services at library desks.
    * When you want to use the specific materials of the Center for Historical Social Science Literature, prior contact is required from Waseda University Library.

Waseda University Library has been having a cooperative agreement with Kansai University Library since 2009.

Available libraries of Kansai University

  • Kansai University Library (on the Senriyama Campus)
    *Learning Commons area is not available. Stack Room is available only for Waseda faculty under this agreement.
    *If you wish to use books/materials which are held on libraries except the General Library on the Senriyama Campus, you need to ask to send them to the General Library.  So pre-contact and a letter of introduction from Waseda Library will be required.
    *Contact in advance from Waseda library is necessary for rare books and valuable materials for every Waseda user.

Waseda University Library has been having a cooperative agreement with The Institute of Developing Economies (IDE) Library since 2018.

The special library is mainly in the field of economics, politics and sociology in developing countries.  Browsing service in the library is open for every user, and Waseda user receives personal loan service under this agreement (see below).

User Qualification

Full time faculty and staff, Part time lecture, Graduate Student, Undergraduate Student, Professor Emeritus

Application Procedure

(1) Submit for an application form for IDE Library Card with your Waseda ID at the Help Desk in the Central Library at WASEDA.

(2) Apply for IDE Library Card bringing the application form and your Waseda ID at IDE LIBRARY.

Expiration Date/ Update

(1) Term of Validity
From the date of issuance to the end of the academic year (3/31)
*If you leave from Waseda during the year, the leaving day will be the expiration date of the card.

(2) Update
If you will stay at Waseda in the next academic year, you can update the card with 1) Application form, 2) Waseda ID card, and 3) IDE Library Card of this academic year.

Cost

Free for issue and update. However, it costs actual expense for reissue when you lost it.

Waseda University has been having a cooperative agreement with Korea University since 1973 and also both Libraries exchanged memorandum of mutual cooperation in March 2002 and started Interlibrary Loan since June 2002. You may be able to consult materials written in Hangeul which are not easily accessible in Japan comparatively quickly at low cost.

Photocopies

Up to 10 requests at one time (you can request again after previous requests are all arrived)

Borrowing

Up to 3 books at once for 4 weeks (including shipping time). You can browse only inside the Central Library (cannot bring them outside of the Library).

Fee

  • Photocopies: 50 won/page + Postage
  • Borrowing: Shipping costs (round trip)
