How did you find out about Waseda University?
After completing my Master’s Degree, I was trying to get a good research position with fellowship. One of my friends came to Japan for his studies and told me about the excellence in work culture in Japan. After that I used to go through the websites of Japanese leading universities, and I found Waseda University is one of the well renowned universities in Japan, and a good platform for Environmental Research.
-Why did you choose Waseda University?
I was qualified in the MEXT recruitment for 2014 academic year. Then I started contacting the professors in Japanese Universities. And in Waseda University, I found there is interesting environmental research is going on in Sakakibara Laboratory, and it was matching with my research interests. So I chose Waseda as my first preference. I also got positive responses from Professor Sakakibara Yutaka, for my candidature, which really helped me in the further recruitment processes.
How did you get information for our program?
For the admission for the doctoral program in Waseda I followed the University Website. It was so informative, and I got almost all the details from the university website. I also looked at the lab website which had the good details and found that my research topic was well matching with their topic. My professor is well known in this field and conducting excellent research work as well. He also emailed me detailed information, and that also helped me to know very well about the work.
Did you have any concerns before coming to Japan?
This was my first time going out of my country, so definitely I was a little bit concerned about the language and culture. It takes time to learn the language, and I still don’t know any Japanese. But after coming here, many people helped me to go through all the processes. Now I got used to the new environment. And also the staff at the Waseda University International Student Desk has been helping us in a very good manner.
Have you had any difficulties when you started a new life here?
Yeah. This is the first time I travel to abroad. And the main problem was communication. I didn’t know Japanese language and I felt everything new. And I was staying a bit far from the university. I felt so difficult for a few days. Initially I had to take help from others. So many people helped me to overcome the difficulties. Later I changed my residence to a nearer place to the campus, so things got easier to manage. And in my laboratory almost all the people communicates well, I got some friends also, and everything is going fine now.
How is your life in Japan and Waseda?
In the university, it is very good because we are getting good assistance from the International Student Desk. It is very nice experience with the university and the International Student Desk. My Professor and lab mates are very good, so it’s a nice experience to work with them. I have some friends also in the campus.
What do you do in your free time?
I have some Indian friends in Japan. Sometimes we all meet and go for some sightseeing. We visited Meiji Jingu Shrine in Harajuku, Okutama lake etc. I really enjoy the travel in Japan with friends.
How are the relationships with your supervisor and lab members?
My supervisor, Professor Yutaka Sakakibara gives excellent guidance in my research field. He is guiding me and giving me good ideas and views about the research, good comments, and successful discussions. He is very nice. The lab members are so cooperative. It is a good working environment in my lab. Almost everyone in the lab speaks English and communicate well, and the professor is very good in English. Every week we have seminars and discussions, also an active interactive sessions.
We go out for some get-together functions like the graduation party and all. We have a good relationship and the lab atmosphere is very nice.
Outline of the research
My research is basically on the wastewater treatment. I am working with Antibiotic contaminated wastewater treatment using biological method. Antibiotic contamination creates environmental problems widely, and it will lead to develop antibiotic resistance in the microorganisms. We are trying to develop an efficient, cost effective and feasible biological treatment method for the removal of antibiotics from the contaminated water.
What is your career goal after your degree completion?
After my graduation, I would like to work further in the environmental research. I will look forward for better opportunities to conduct research, which can be useful for our country.
