How did you find out about Waseda University?

I was working on Ministry of Agriculture and this ministry is one of the target organizations of JICA PEACE project.  After I got the list of Japanese Universities from Peace Project, I started searching Japanese universities on my field of study, but I found that Waseda University is well known university among others.  Waseda has many good facilities and also has over 133 years of history in terms education.  I got very interested in Waseda and tried to get an admission.  There was a recommendation from my friend who was also my colleague.  I got some information from him, too.

Why did you choose Waseda University?

4-200x200Waseda University was very famous and I got recommendations from my friends.

How did you get information for our program?

It was through JICA.  Coordinators from JICE and JICA are very nice and they are very helpful.  Even if it is a small problem or big problem, they help me.

Did you have any concerns before coming to Japan?

I did not have so many worries because we are Asian countries so there will not be so many differences.  My concerns were about food, now I do not have any problems at all.  After I came here I could find any kind of food here.

Have you had any difficulties when you started a new life here?

P1010727-200x150I think anyone going to a new environment would have some kind of difficulties but in my case one of the difficulties was about language.  When I go to a store buying something it was very difficult for me to find what I want.  The second difficulty was direction.  For the first month I could not find my way.  I wanted to go from one location to other location but it was very difficult to find a way to get there.  Trains and metros are very complicated.  It is fine now but it was difficult for a while.  Japanese language is also difficult.  I learnt a few words but I cannot communicate because it is really hard.  I usually use English when I go to stores.  If the people do not understand what I am saying I just draw a picture and say “this is what I want.”

How is your life in Japan and Waseda?

Everything is different and interesting for me.  I remember one day before coming to Japan, my director in Afghanistan told me that you might get feel depressed easily in Japan because you don’t know the language and the communication is difficult.  You may feel alone, he said.  But when I came here I found many friends not only Afghani friends but also other international students from China, Indonesia, Taiwan and many other countries.  Sometimes I join events of ICC and I think it is a great opportunity for international students to meet new friends.  Especially the events for culture show are interesting.  Now everything is going well.

What do you do in your free time?

1-200x266On my research I am quite busy but every Friday evening I go to TIC (Tokyo International Center) and play volleyball with my Afghani friends.  Also sometimes I go to Waseda gym.  I never played volleyball in Afghanistan but I started playing since I came here.  We do home party a lot.  Sometimes I go to my friends’ house and sometimes they come to my place.

How are the relationships with your supervisor and lab members?

3-200x200In our lab there are many international students from China, Taiwan, Africa and Myanmar.  Our relationship is really good.  Our supervisor is very hard working so I was very motivated by him.  We have also group discussions every week with our professor and lab members.  This group discussion is basically to see research progress but we can also share other problems and all the lab members are very helpful.  We went to summer camp and spent 3 days there.  The short trip made us very friendly.  Some Japanese students don’t know how to speak in English but I am trying to learn Japanese language.  I am planning to take some Japanese classes next semester as I have more free time.

Outline of the research

My research is focus on probability caching on information centric networking.
The Current Internet Architecture is designed to communicate between hosts in the network, a user has to specify a host in order to retrieve information.
In addition, because the IP router is stateless and does not provide a caching capacity, the same request would be made multiple times through the path, and cause an unnecessary bandwidth usage.
In ICN (Information Centric Networking) users do not care about from which location the content is coming but, they are interested in getting the information.
ICN routers are able to cache the content to reduce the traffic bandwidth and server load,
I am doing research on how to Probably cache the content more efficiently.

What is your career goal after your degree completion?

I go back to Afghanistan and stay with my family.  I also go back to my work, the ministry of Agriculture, and I want to implement and share with other colleagues what I learnt from here.  That is my goal when I go back to my home country.  But if I get an opportunity for my PhD, I may come back to Waseda.
