How did you find out about Waseda University?

I have a friend who is studying in Waseda and we have the same academic background.  I keep in touch with her during her study in Waseda and she told me much about Waseda.  Thanks to her for everything.  I also looked to the internet about Waseda.

Why did you choose Waseda University?

  1. Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) has a big program called “5000 Doctors”.  This program provides a scholarship to academicians or human resources to study abroad.  MORA gives a lot of attention to researchers and lectures.
  2. MORA sends their human resources to the best university in the world to study and Waseda University is one of them.
  3. Actually, studying in Japan is my dream, and I am happy finally my dream comes true.

How did you get information for our program?

Besides asking information from some friends who is studying in Waseda, I also found it on the internet.

Did you have any concerns before coming to Japan?

I concerned about the language.

Have you had any difficulties when you started a new life here?

IMG-20151125-WA0024-200x150In the first time I arrived in Japan, I had difficulty to communicate with Japanese people, but so far so good for me.  When I need to buy something, sometimes I find the Japanese language in the digital dictionary, so smartphone is helpful.  When you are looking for address, train schedule, etc., you can find them on the Google maps.  I also have Japanese friends in my lab who always help me if I have a problem related the Japanese language.

How is your life in Japan and Waseda?

It is very nice.  Every one respects each other.  As a Muslim, I can pray (doing sholat) in the lab.

I am glad to study here.  I have presentation every week to report my progress.  Sometimes it makes me nervous, but actually I have much feedback from the presentation.

The feel of the global university is very strong here.  My supervisor often holds international workshops from multidiscipline area such as chemicals, physics, and engineering which are attended by professors from the top universities from Europe, America and Asia.  I think it is amazing.  I am glad to participate in the workshop.

What do you do in your free time?

IMG-20151116-WA0007-200x112Sometimes I go around Tokyo, meet with other Indonesian students, and do video-call with my family in Indonesia.  But I mostly go to the lab to study.

How are the relationships with your supervisor and lab members?

My supervisor is very kind.  He gives a lot of attention to improve my knowledge related to my research.  When I have presentation, he gives me a feedback by interesting ways. Sometimes, when I cannot find the solution about some problems, he doesn’t give me the solution directly, but he gives me some clues so that I can find them by myself.

My lab friends are also very kind.  I often ask them about some topics such as functional analysis.  Although some friends are already not staying in the same room with me, they come to my room to help me when I ask them some helps.

Outline of the research

My major field of study is mathematics, especially in Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations.  For 3 years doctoral study at Waseda University, I plan to conduct some research and the purpose of my study about the fluid dynamics which is one of the most interesting field in the mathematical physics and also gives a lot of important ideas to the fluid mechanical engineering like the design of the fluid machine, solving the environmental issues and so on.  I also would like to study some qualitative properties of solutions to the NS equation by using the harmonic analysis and the Fourier analysis, as well as the free boundary value problem of the Navier Stokes equation in view of the maximal regularity.  I plan to create a new method to find the solutions of the NS and apply it to other cases that are related to mechanical engineering cases.

What is your career goal after your degree completion?

Since I am a lecturer (civil servant) in a University in Indonesia, I will be back to my country when I finish my doctoral program.  I will teach and share my experience, knowledge that I reach during my study in Waseda to my students and colleagues.  I also plan to continue further research in Indonesia and make some collaborative research with Prof. Shibata in the future, if it is possible.

Short message to the prospective students

in English

IMG-20151116-WA0006-200x112Hi everyone, especially lecturers under Ministry religious Affairs (MORA).  My name is Suma’inna, a math lecturer in UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.  I am now studying in Waseda University as a doctoral student supported by MORA scholarships.  Thanks to the MORA for the support.  I will come back to serve to my country.

Studying abroad would be more open our horizons about knowledge, especially in the top universities because we can access references easily.  We do not only communicate with local residents, but also with people from different countries.  We can also study from professors from various countries because international workshops or discussions are often held.

If I can come here, so you also can.

in Indonesia

Ganbatte!
