【Message from Graduates】LU, Shiyuan : Cutting-Edge Medical Research―Challenging to elucidate the pathogenesis and treatment of Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis―

  • Shanghai Yan’an High School (Graduated in June 2020)
  • School of International Liberal Studies, Waseda University (Graduated in September 2024)
  • Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo (April 2025 ~)

― Could you tell us about your research at the graduate school?

I entered the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tokyo in April 2025, where I currently research non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Using a range of biological and chemical methods, I aim to uncover the underlying mechanisms of the disease and explore potential genetic and pharmacological treatment strategies. Compared to my undergraduate years, graduate school life is more structured, with fixed coursework and most of my time dedicated to laboratory research. What brings me the most fulfillment now is working at the forefront of medical science. My current goal is to contribute, even in a small way, to expanding knowledge about NASH and identifying effective treatments to prevent progression to cirrhosis. Given how failure and trial-and-error define the scientific process, I’ve come to truly appreciate each small step forward.

― How did you decide your current academic path?

During my first two years in the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), I was given the freedom to explore various academic fields. This flexibility laid the foundation for my eventual decision to focus on biology. Initially unsure of my future specialization, I took a wide range of introductory courses—from economics and international relations to computer science and linear algebra. This interdisciplinary approach deepened my understanding of both the sciences and humanities, allowing me to view global issues from multiple perspectives.

What truly inspired my shift toward biology was an intermediate seminar that explored life science beyond high school-level knowledge. The professor’s engaging lectures sparked my curiosity about the human body: How do cells spontaneously form and die? What are the rules of intracellular transport? Each biological mechanism revealed an elegant logic that fascinated me. I realized that understanding what happens inside our own bodies is not only intellectually rewarding but deeply meaningful. Driven by this interest, I began studying biomedical science through lectures and by following recent developments in research. I also recognized the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in modern science. To strengthen my skills, I chose Mathematical Sciences as a concentration, immersing myself in quantitative reasoning to better prepare for future medical research.

― What do you think about the appealing point and strength of SILS?

Looking back, SILS offered two key advantages. First, its diverse curriculum helps students unsure of their future path explore a wide range of fields before committing to a major—avoiding the risk of investing years in an unsuitable discipline. Second, its interdisciplinary learning approach mirrors the demands of our rapidly evolving world. As many cutting-edge medical research projects now require integration of computer science, physics, and other fields, SILS graduates are well-prepared with a broad academic foundation.

My four years at SILS were both enriching and joyful. As an international student, I was able to communicate fluently in English with fellow international peers and in Japanese with local students. The professors and classmates were supportive, helping me gain confidence in using different languages through group discussions and presentations. SILS helped me grow from a high school graduate into a confident, independent thinker. Moreover, SILS offered the opportunity to study abroad, allowing me to explore knowledge beyond textbooks in a global classroom.

― Any message to our prospective applicants?

For high school students who are interested in studying abroad or unsure about their future academic path, SILS is an ideal choice. It provides freedom to explore your interests, make international friendships, and learn from world-class faculty. I believe the four years spent at SILS will remain a beautiful and unforgettable part of my life.
