I learned about things in-depth through real-life experiences

I studied environmental science at University College of Freiburg in Germany. Freiburg is known as an environmentally friendly city, and I had been interested in their study program since I got into Waseda. I took seminars and a project-based course on environmental science where I learned different impacts of climate change and approaches of climate mitigation, and I became more aware of climate action. Moreover, I feel more responsible for my own behavior in regard to environmental impact, as I got along with peer students and other internationals who choose vegan diet or transportation with less carbon footprint on a daily basis from the perspective of environmental protection. These real experiences throughout the exchange program influenced my everyday behaviors a lot, which I think would not have happened without the year abroad. After the year in Germany, I belong to the seminar class on urban study where we learn sustainable urban planning, and my interest has expanded to designing of infrastructure for environmentally friendly means of transportation.
Experience in my year abroad has made me more conscious of carbon footprint by our lives, and therefore I would like to keep learning how to develop a sustainable society. I hope your time abroad brings new interests and opportunities in your future career.
