Self-Introduction
I am delighted to join SILS as an Assistant Professor, especially as a graduate of the school. I teach courses related to language acquisition, Korean Studies, and Korean language. Growing up as a Tokyo-born Korean in a multilingual environment, I naturally developed an interest in languages and language learning. I am passionate about teaching and always look forward to meeting students each semester. At my alma mater, I hope to share my experience and engage students through both teaching and research.
Research Interests
My research focuses on heritage language education among the Korean diaspora in Japan, with particular attention to language use, proficiency, and identity. My previous work has examined multilingual practices in Korean newcomer families, including family language policies and home language environments. Through interviews and speech assessments, I have explored how heritage language development relates to linguistic competence and identity formation. More broadly, my interests include heritage language learning, bilingualism and multilingualism, and second language acquisition.
Profile
I received my BA from the School of International Liberal Studies, Waseda University, and my MA and PhD in Applied Linguistics from the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies (GSICCS), Waseda University. My academic interests include applied linguistics, second language acquisition, heritage language education, and bilingualism and multilingualism. I specialize in the study of Korean heritage language speakers in Japan.
