How to identify as a truly global citizen

My identity as a fifth-generation Japanese-American was something I struggled with when first joining SILS. I wasn’t “hāfu” or “kikokushijo”, and only being able to speak one language made me feel like an underdog. However, throughout my time at SILS I learned that no one can be perfectly compartmentalized. Being a true global citizen has nothing to do with the languages you speak or countries you’ve been to, but about being able to Listen, understand, and empathize with people, no matter what background they are from. This global outlook has shaped who I am, and I am so proud of my identity.

This is the message for the SILS 15th anniversary.
