「Break the Impossible!」

理工学術院総合研究所　所長 木野 邦器 (先進理工学部 応用化学科 教授)

創設から70余年の歴史を有する早稲田大学理工学術院総合研究所（2017年9月理工学研究所と統合）は、大学の知を社会に還元し、豊かな生活と輝かしい未来を創造することを使命として活動を行ってきました。 この間、社会情勢は大きく変化し、人の価値感も変わりましたが、理工学研究所は、本学の「進取の精神」に基づき、理学と工学の融合を早くから実践し、学際研究を含む理工学の基礎およびその応用に関する研究を着実かつ大きく展開してきました。 本学は2032年に創立150周年を迎えますが、“教育・研究の質の向上とアジアにおけるリーディングユニバーシティ”を目指して基本方針をWaseda Vision 150として掲げ、当研究所はその実現に向けて具体的な活動を展開しています。 産学連携や社会連携の強化もその重要な事業であり、新たな取り組みと健全な研究推進によるイノベーション創出を実現していきたいと考えています。 併せて高い教養と見識を持った次世代を担う若手研究者の育成も大学に期待される重要な役割だと考えています。

常識の範囲で物事を考えているだけではイノベーションは実現できません。 私は「未常識を常識に」という表現をよく使います。 今は常識ではなくても、いずれは常識になる新しい何かがある未知の領域に目を向けて挑んでいこう、ということです。 若い研究者や学生には無限の可能性があります。 高き志と理想を掲げ、その夢の実現に向けて、知恵と勇気をもって果敢にそして粘り強く挑戦してもらいたいと思っています。

今世紀の人類に課せられた様々な課題の中で、物質的にも精神的にも豊かで幸せな社会の実現に向けて、当研究所は先端的科学技術と優秀な人材育成の観点で貢献していきます。

With more than 70 years of history since being established, Research Institute for Science and Engineering has been conducting activities with a mission to return knowledge to create a brighter future and affluent life. In these 70 years, both social trends and people’s sense of values have drastically changed. Based on our “Enterprising Spirit,” the Research Institute for Science and Engineering has put the integration of science and engineering into practice from an early stage and steadily and profoundly developed research of basic and applied science and engineering, including interdisciplinary research.

Waseda will reach its 150th anniversary in 2032, and heralding our basic policies of “Waseda Vision 150” to “Enhance education and research quality” and become “Asia’s leading university,” we execute precise action toward realizing them. The strengthening of academic- industrial alliances and cooperation with society are very important roles of the university and we want to create innovation with new initiatives to promote solid and sound research. In addition, we believe that the development of young researchers with a high level of cultural awareness and insight into bearing future generations is an important assignment that is in fact expected of a university.

Innovation cannot be realized as far as one may think within the framework of common sense. I frequently use the phrase, “Make uncommon sense common sense.” What I mean is that we should focus on and challenge unknown fields where we can discover something new that is now uncommon, but that will become common place at some point in the future. Young researchers and students possess an infinite number of possibilities. I want them to herald ambitions and ideals of high level and take on the challenge of realizing dreams with wisdom and courage, while acting both bravely and tenaciously.

With the vast range of challenges that mankind will face this century, our institute can contribute to the realization of a physically and mentally rich and indeed harmonious society from the viewpoint of cutting-edge science, technology and the development of excellent human resources.
