Science & Engineering Library User Guide

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-degree students
  • Faculty and staff
  • Students from Waseda University Senior/Junior High School and affiliated high schools
  • Library card holders

  • Users from the universities under cooperative agreement with Waseda (Keio University, Doshisha University)
  • Special auditing students and exchange students under cooperative agreement universities with Waseda

※Science and Engineering Library is not open to the public. Please take the predetermined procedure in your institution or a public library.

Enter / Exit the library

To enter the library

  • Users can enter the library by using User Card(Student ID, Faculty/Staff ID, Library Card, Waseda Card, etc.). The library is an automatic admission method by User Card. If you were forgotten your User Card, you cannot enter the library.
  • If you were waiting reissuing Student ID, please show your certificate published by the faculty.
  • Visitors need the letter of introduction of the library of your belonged university, etc.

To exit the library

  • Please exit the gate. The exit gate is equipped with the BDS (Book Detection System).

Borrowing

To borrow books, please bring books to the counter with student ID, Faculty/staff ID, or library card. Borrowing service is available 30 minutes before the closing time.

  • The number of books is the total number of books that can be borrowed at one time from all Waseda University Libraries managed under the common loan rules.
  • Periodicals cannot be checked out.

 

Returning books

Please return the materials by the due date to the circulation desk when the library is open or to the return box when the library is closed.
Books deposited in the retuen box will be processed on the following business day.

  • If a book is overdue for more than 4 days past the due date, the borrowing of the book will be suspended until the book is returned. For each day that a book is overdue from the due date, the borrowing of the book will be suspended for one day. When a book is suspended, it will not be available for borrowing at other libraries.
  • The day after the due date, 4 days, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, and 60 days after the due date, the library system will automatically send an email titled “Book Return Request” to your Waseda mail (library card users and emeritus professors have a priority email address registered with the library).

Making copies

  • Please respect the copyright law of Japan when making photocopies.
    For the purpose of your own research, a user can make a single copy less than half of a work.
    See material can be copied for details.
    Copy machines cannot be used to make copies of non-library materials.
  • Insert cash or a copy card.
  • Copy machines are available until 30 minutes before closing time.

How to get copy cards

  • Copy cards can be purchased from the vending machine, but a receipt is not issued.

Purchase requests

Purchase requests are accepted for books not owned by the Science & Engineering Library. Online requests are accepted.
We cannot accept all of the requests because of the budget limitation. Notification will be sent via e-mail within 10 days only if the book will be purchased. When the requested book become available, notification will be sent to you via e-mail and the book will be held at the check-out counter for 7 days.

Reminder for returns

  • The day after the due date, 4 days, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, and 60 days after the due date, the library system will automatically send an email titled “Book Return Request” to your Waseda mail (library card users and emeritus professors have a priority email address registered with the library).
  • If you receive a demand for a book that you have returned, please check “MyLibrary” in the upper right menu of WINE and report it by email.

Manners to use libraries

  • Please keep valuables with you at all times.
  • You are responsible for all your belongings.
  • No smoking on the premises.
  • Please handle all library materials with care and be careful not to damage them or get them wet.
  • Strict measures will be taken for malicious violations such as stealing library books, writing, underlining and marking library material, or tearing pages out of books.
  • In the event of loss or damage to library books, please report to the counter immediately. You may be asked to compensate the library for the loss or damage. See Liability for Lost or Damaged Books
