Research Summary
The Waseda University Gender Studies Institute was first launched 25 years ago in April 2000, led by several full-time faculty members who specialize in gender and sexuality studies and teach related courses.
The Gender Studies Institute has thus been active for over a quarter of a century and is well-known both domestically and internationally. Interest in gender has been growing throughout Japanese society in recent years, and the research of its staff members has attracted increasing attention. Over the coming five-year term, we will invigorate collaborative research among staff members and develop interdisciplinary gender and sexuality studies. Additionally, we continue to receive requests for cooperation from other universities who want to incorporate gender education into their university faculty development programs. We receive many inquiries from overseas, have active exchanges with researchers at universities overseas, and also provide opportunities for visiting researchers to present their work at public lectures. Gender Studies 21, which was first published in 2011, is now in its 14th volume and we anticipate continuing to publish the journal. For these reasons, the Waseda University Gender Studies Institute intends to continue to use its well-established name over the coming fifth term of its existence.
The staff members that are responsible for editing the Institute’s journal and organizing symposiums are divided into five groups, with each group assigned a different role each year to advance research. Visiting researchers will also be actively involved, and each group will publish the results of their research and education and disseminate them widely to society. (October 2024)
