Research Summary
In today’s international society, we face not only direct violence such as terrorism and war, but also violence brought about by social structures such as poverty, discrimination and inequality. Johan Galtung, a Norwegian peace studies leader, described these forms of violence as structural violence. Based on Galtung’s concept of violence, the Institute aims to examine various social issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. We will seek solutions to these problems from the perspective of the people involved, who are socially vulnerable under the influence of structural violence, thereby contributing to the development of peace studies. The Institute also aims to be open to the public for the realization of positive peace in the international community. Furthermore, the institute aims to send a message of peace from Waseda University to the world, based on Japan’s Peace Constitution and the experience of radiation exposure.
Above all, based on Japan’s Peace Constitution and our experience of radiation exposure in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima, we will place importance on sending out a message of peace from Waseda University to the world.
