Divergent paths in Eurasian migration: a new estimate of Internal Migration in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-century China
Based on the Xingke Tiben, this paper constructs a new estimate of internal migration in eighteenth-and-nineteenth-century China. After assessing the source’s biases, using this new empirical basis, this paper presents a new picture of Chinese migration that distinguishes it from contemporary Eurasian and American migration with substantial overall size, relative balance between centrifugal and centripetal migration, initial parity of short-to-medium-distance and long-distance migration, moderate but decreasing migration rate, and spatial-temporally diverse migration patterns. The new estimate suggests that the simplistic portrayal of “Chinese migration to agricultural frontiers” in existing literature must be revisited within broader spatial-temporal and socioeconomic context.
