研究テーマ
I study modern Japanese history. My past research has examined the formation of regional identity within the rise of a modern nation-state. I also maintain a side interest in the intersection of visual media and historical remembrance.
研究内容・現在の専門分野を目指した理由やきっかけ
I grew up in New York, where people love nothing more than to tell outsized stories and get into random arguments. The study of history is a lot like that. It is grounded in textual empiricism but soars on narrative creativity, and I’ve always enjoyed that tension between discipline and liberty.
My research agenda tries to satisfy my long-standing curiosity about the nature of difference and sense of belonging—be they physical, cultural, or linguistic—and the struggles of people caught “in between,” so to speak. This might have something to do with my personal background in between two worlds, namely Japan and the US, and often feeling like an étranger yearning for home.
目指す教育
私が一方的に目指したい教育や育てたい学生像がある、というよりは、個々学生が自ら定めた目標や、なりたい自分に（ゆっくりでも）向かうことの手助けをしたいと考えています。 強いて言えば、今まで抱いてきた「世界とは、こうである」「世の中とは、こうである」といった既成概念を疑い、再考し、場合によっては覆す思考回路と勇気を身につけてくれれば、嬉しいです。 いずれにせよ、それらに伴う問題発見や自己表現をするにあたり、英語力は一つの武器になります。しっかり身につけておいて損はないでしょう。
