早稲田大学は、バーミンガム大学とのシェイクスピア研究における学術連携の一環として、両校の教員と若手研究者によるカンファレンスを開催します。特別講演として、シェイクスピアの映画研究の世界的権威である、ラッセル・ジャクソン教授による講演会を開催します。
ジャクソン教授は1978 年より長きに渡りバーミンガム大学シェイクスピア研究所にて研究・教育に従事し、『シェイクスピアと英語圏の映画』（2014 年）や『シェイクスピア映画の形成』（2007 年）など多数の書籍を執筆されています。講演では、戦後に公開された３つのハムレット映画、黒澤明の『悪い奴ほどよく眠る』(1960 年)、グレゴリー・コジンツェフの『ハムレット』(1964 年)、ヘルムート・コイトナーの『静寂だけが残った』(1960 年) を基に、政治腐敗との闘いについてお話いただきます。(※写真は映画『蜘蛛巣城』監督：黒澤明、製作：東宝、1957）

■Professor Russell Jackson to give a lecture ”‘Offence’s gilded hand’: fighting corruption in three postwar Hamlet films” on Jan 22 at Waseda University.
As a part of Shakespeare collaboration between the University of Birmingham and Waseda University, we are extremely pleased to welcome Professor Russell Jackson, Professor Emeritus of the University of Birmingham, UK, to give a lecture on the evening of Sunday 22. Professor Jackson is recognized as one of the leading authorities on Shakespearean cinema in the world. He has had a long and distinguished career in academia, teaching and researching at the Shakespeare Institute and the Department of English and Drama at Birmingham since 1978.
The films Professor Jackson will discuss in his lecture are Akira Kurosawa’s The Bad Sleep Well ( 悪い奴ほどよく眠る, 1960), Grigori Kozintsev’s Hamlet (1964), and Helmut Kautner’s Der Rest ist Schweigen (The Rest is Silence, Germany1960)

■International Conference: Shakespeare. Film. East. West.
The conference will feature presentations by professors from both universities and by young researchers on the theme of Shakespeare films. There will be two keynote lectures by Professor Russell Jackson and Professor Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto of Waseda University. In addition, there will be a number of presentation sessions on Shakespearean film including papers on Akira Kurosawa and Kenneth Branagh among others.
