Abstract
The landscape of English Language Teaching (ELT) is evolving in light of emerging writing standards within a context increasingly influenced by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). As GenAI technologies continue to advance, educators face new challenges and opportunities in teaching writing skills effectively. In this talk, from the perspective of an editor and English language teacher educator, I will discuss the implications of these developments for ELT practitioners, focusing on how to integrate generative AI tools responsibly into writing instruction while maintaining the integrity of traditional writing standards. I invite an open discussion on best practices for incorporating AI-driven writing support in language learning environments, addressing issues of authenticity, creativity, and academic integrity. The GenAI movement is well underway—we need to equip educators with the knowledge and strategies needed to navigate the intersection of ELT, writing standards, and AI technology.
Prof. Jim McKinley, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), has taught in higher education in the UK, Japan, Australia, and Uganda, as well as US schools. His research targets implications of globalization for L2 writing, language education, and higher education studies, particularly the teaching-research nexus and English medium instruction. Jim is co-author and co-editor of several books on research methods in applied linguistics. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the journal System, and a co-Editor of the Cambridge Elements series Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press).
