Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic and the global mental health crisis have accelerated the need for innovative approaches to psychological support. Metaverse counseling (MC)—where counselors and clients interact through avatars in virtual reality (VR) environments—has emerged as a promising modality that combines accessibility, immersion, and data-driven insights. This lecture will introduce the concept, structure, and technological foundations of metaverse counseling, highlighting its practical applications in schools, universities, and clinical settings in South Korea. Empirical findings will be presented on therapeutic presence, working alliance, and silence events in metaverse-based sessions compared with traditional face-to-face counseling. The talk will also discuss current challenges, including ethical considerations, technological issues, and the potential for integrating AI and digital therapeutics. By examining both opportunities and limitations, this presentation aims to envision the future direction of counseling in the era of digital transformation.
