Abstract
The ubiquitous use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) has been one of the driving forces of developments in today’s increasingly interconnected yet greatly diversified world. Despite the obvious relevance, there has been very little research into the personal costs, and in particular the cognitive load and potential stress, for non-native speakers of English who have to work in that language. The 52-month interdisciplinary Sinergia project Cognitive Load in Interpreting and Translation (CLINT), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, addressed these gaps by examining how German native-speaker translators and interpreters with different levels of expertise as well as multilinguals without formal training in interpreting or translation cope with ELF input (produced by Chinese and Italian native speakers). The project focused on performance, self-report, behavioural and physiological indices of cognitive load during interpreting, translation and general language processing tasks in laboratory and simulated workplace settings and the impact on performance in spoken and written language processing. The overarching aim was to look for evidence of a clear ELF effect or ELF disadvantage in the data, of the influence of interpreting or translation expertise on processing ELF input as well as of specific strategies used when processing ELF.
