Waseda University Memorial Hall, the venue for the fencing events at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics
Waseda University Memorial Hall used to be located where Waseda Arena (Building 37) is now, where the Waseda Sports Museum is located. Memorial Hall was used as a stage for many Waseda students' youth, hosting entrance and graduation ceremonies, the Waseda-Keio game, the Waseda Festival, health and physical education classes, and sports club activities. In addition, the fencing competitions were held at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Memorial Hall was the only university facility to be used as an Olympic venue. In this way, Memorial Hall was an important historical location for Waseda University.
It was deeply moving to see Matsuyama and Kano, the two gold medalists in fencing, gazing at the monument commemorating their time as fencing champions. Even for them, who have mastered the sport, standing there and feeling the history must have been a special experience. I believe it was a valuable opportunity for them to once again feel the tradition and significance of fencing through their achievements on the Olympic stage. Their visit was a wonderful opportunity to further highlight the traditions of Waseda sports.
