from Genji no utsushi-e
Waseda University Library is fortunate to have the Kuyō Bunko collection of some 2,400 items related to The Tale of Genji. As well as manuscripts and early printed editions, the Kuyō Bunko also contains a great many items based on Nise Murasaki inaka Genji (A Fraudulent Murasaki’s Bumpkin Genji, in Michael Emmerich’s translation), the nineteenth-century adaptation of Genji by Ryūtei Tanehiko (1783-1842): works of art, playing cards, board games (sugoroku), and the like.
In this exhibition, for the first time we present all 70 sets of full-color “brocade pictures” (nishiki-e) that make up the Genji no utsushi-e albums in the Kuyō Bunko. Based on Nise Murasaki inaka Genji, each set consists of three paintings, and the whole is bound into two folding albums. We hope that you will enjoy the sumptuous colors that extend right to the edges of the paper. *Genji no utsushi-e exhibition schedule is available here.
We also showcase other Genji related items that—like brocade pictures—were hugely popular in the Edo period: Genji incense motifs, board games, playing cards, and other pastimes.
Off we go now into the Genji world that captivated the hearts of Edoites!
