【Exhibition】 Sumiyoshi Hiroyuki’s Folding Screen “Courtiers Hawking in Spring and Winter”:
Draft Paintings Bring Gift to the Chosŏn Royal Court Back to Life / Center for Scholarly Information
“Courtiers Hawking in Spring and Winter” is a pair of folding screens created by Sumiyoshi Hiroyuki, an official painter to the Tokugawa shogunate, as a gift to the Chosŏn royal court. The Library’s collection includes the draft paintings for the spring section of the folding screens. As not only the completed work and the draft paintings for the winter section but also the roughly 200 pairs of the folding screens presented to the Chosŏn royal court and their draft paintings are now lost, they are extremely rare materials. In this exhibition timed to coincide with spring, we display all the draft paintings for spring alongside other interesting materials.
