◆How to acquire practical data science skills

Waseda University offers a Data Science Education Program centered around the Certification Program in Data Science, allowing students from all faculties and graduate schools to systematically learn data science from the basics to advanced levels.
If we consider Step 1 to be acquiring systematic knowledge and skills through the Data Science Education Program, then Step 2 can be said to be acquiring the practical ability to utilize these. In order to hone the practical ability to utilize data science, it is important to actually analyze data. We recommend that you actually utilize data science when writing reports, presentations, graduation theses, etc. in classes, seminars, and laboratories.
In addition, Center for Data Science provides various opportunities for hands-on data science work in collaboration with companies and other organizations.

About the Data Science Competition

Every year, Center for Data Science holds the Waseda University Data Science Competition (hereinafter referred to as the DS Competition) in collaboration with each faculty (an organization including undergraduate and graduate schools). Any student at the university can participate in the DS Competition. Participants form teams of several people, analyze data according to a theme, and present the results. Although the theme changes every year, the DS Competition is characterized by the fact that it uses actual data for analysis. Many students use the DS Competition as a place to put data science into practice after learning it in classes and seminars, and more than 100 students, regardless of their field of study, participate every year, putting what they learned in undergraduate and graduate school to use in the DS Competition.

About the industry-academia collaborative career education program

Center for Data Science is working on various initiatives to develop human resources capable of utilizing data science through industry-academia collaboration.
In the annual Data Science Competition, students form teams and use the data science knowledge and skills they have learned to analyze and present data on a given theme and data. Any Waseda University student can participate in this competition.
We also offer career education programs and internship opportunities to help improve practical data science skills and develop your career.
Long-term internships in particular allow students to become part of an actual project at the company where they are interning and experience working with data science. This provides a valuable opportunity to analyze real data, and by communicating with company employees, students can think deeply about their future careers and gain a more concrete image of them.

*Regarding "internships," due to the revision of the "Basic Principles for Promoting Internships" (agreement of the three ministries) agreed upon by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, a review is being conducted on the categorization of initiatives related to supporting the career development of university students, etc., from FY2023. This event is listed as an "internship" because it will be held in FY2022.
