Kurihara_TakashiReason for applying to the Graduate School of Economics

When I was an undergraduate, I belonged to Mr. Koichi Suga’s seminar group which dealt with public economics. I did research on decision making concerning medical technology development for my graduation thesis. As a result, I felt there was not enough discussion due to lack of research. Even if I have a unique idea, it becomes a dogmatic opinion if I do not discuss the idea appropriately. Therefore, I decided to apply to the Graduate School of Economics in order to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct productive discussions. While I was in the masters course I decided to further continue my research, and I applied to the PhD course.

Most memorable lectures

The most memorable is the entire curriculum of the five-year integrated PhD program which I have been in since the first year of my masters course. Most lectures were conducted in English, and the following subjects—microeconomics, macroeconomics, game theory, mathematics for economics, and econometrics—were compulsory. Therefore, I was able to see the connection and difference in each field with a wider view, and this was an important experience. When you try to communicate with researchers from other fields, you need to understand the particular way of thinking of each field. Also, by trying various approaches for one theme, we can achieve a richer research outcome. In these two years, I believe that I have achieved an “expansion of the research area and a diversification of the research method” within myself.

About my research theme

I am currently conducting two primary research subjects. One is the preference relationship in subsets of a selectable set or an executable action set. This is the field related to social choice theory and utility theory. Another is the economic experiment using an eye tracker. I am researching the relationship between information acquisition behavior and selection behavior in a strategic form game.

About my future from here

My current goal is to obtain a PhD. After that, I hope I could continue my research and also become a helping hand for students who want to become researchers like me.
