The Benefits of Exchange Experience at HAS
I stayed at HAS as an exchange student for 2 weeks in March, 2017. I truly enjoyed the stay. In fact, it was the most exciting and fruitful experience of my life so far. It has brought me two significant benefits for my personal growth. Here, I will try to illustrate what the two benefits are.
The first benefit of this trip was the opportunity to have hilarious friends at HAS. During the two weeks, I found many HAS friends who made my experience so memorable.
It was just easy for me to make friends with HAS students because they were very friendly and welcoming to all Japanese exchange students. They always smiled at me with “Hello” or “こんにちは” whether in class or in the hallway. Such simple acts made me feel at home and open. Soon I was not shy anymore and found myself walking on campus as part of HAS students community. Spending time with my friends at HAS gave me precious memories that I will not forget. Let me list the best two of them. I am grateful to the boy whom I practiced a guitar duet song with in the classical guitar activity. He gave me a special time to share the joy of playing music. Such relaxing moment we shared together across the culture and language border. Then, I most appreciate my exchange partner. He was fluent at speaking Japanese and helped me around the campus during the stay. I had a great time with him talking about schools and cultures of each other, playing catch, playing TV game and more. We can say we surely made close friends. I do believe this is the true benefit of my experience at HAS.
The second benefit was the opportunity to feel a strong tie with Korea and Korean people. Before the exchange program, I had been feeling a certain distance between myself and Korea. Never had I seen a full picture of what Korean student life is like, their feelings and their characters. In fact, I was not necessarily interested in Korean life and cultures before. I had tried to study about them, but the pieces of information on media outlets; TV and newspapers did not give me the reality of Korea at all. News articles and rumors are sometimes, maybe often, based on stereotype. To be honest, I did have a subtle anxiety toward Korean people before I came. However, spending two weeks at HAS totally changed my view towards Korea and Korean people. Having good friends in HAS made me look at Korea in a whole new light. Korea was beyond the horizon before, but now it is so familiar. It made me realize my own bias, and gave me a positive attitude towards better understanding of Korea. Reading about Korea was nothing like experiencing Korea. Likewise, desktop knowledge is never the same as firsthand experience of another culture. It was totally an eye opening experience to know what I did not know. I cannot thank enough to those who helped this program. My excellent experience, studying at HAS for 2 weeks, made lasting ties to HAS and Korea that were hard to leave. I will have another chance to visit HAS to join the International Symposium in summer 2017. I hope it will make relationships with my friends stronger and we will foster much better understanding of each country.
