Borrowing Rules

For Waseda users only

The following rules apply to the Central Library, the Campus Libraries (Takata, Toyama, Science & Engineering, Tokorozawa), the Students’ Reading Rooms (Political Science & Economics, Law, Education, Commerce & SILS, Social Sciences, Japanese Language, Science & Engineering), the Theater Museum Library, the Waseda International House of Literature (WIHL) and the Students’ Reading Room (Graduate School of Law).   • All the loans from the libraries listed on the top of this document are counted.
  • Within the number above, you can borrow up to 5 materials from the Student Reading Rooms (Political Science & Economics, Law, Education, Commerce & SILS, Social Sciences).
  • Within the number above, you can borrow up to 10 materials from the Japanese Language Students’ Reading Room.
  • Within the number above, you can borrow up to 10 Japanese materials and 10 foreign materials from the Theater Museum Library. Please note that undergraduates cannot borrow the materials from the Theater Museum Library except when the loan is for writing graduation thesis. For more information, please visit the Theater Museum Website (*Japanese only).
  • Within the number above, you can borrow up to 5 materials from WIHL. Please note that Undergraduates, Library Card (Blue) holders, Affiliated Senior High School students, and Art & Architecture School students cannot borrow the materials from WIHL.

*2 Undergraduate students cannot borrow the materials of the research stacks of WIHL, but can browse them only for the purpose of writing their graduation theses with a letter of introduction from a full-time faculty of Waseda University who supervises them.

*3 Please note that Library Card (Blue) holders cannot borrow materials from the student reading rooms (Political Science & Economics, Law, Education, Commerce, Social Sciences). Materials located in the student reading rooms (SILS, Japanese Language, Science & Engineering) can be checked out.

*4 Please note that Affiliated Senior High School students and Art & Architecture School students cannot borrow materials from the student reading rooms (Political Science & Economics, Law, Education, Commerce, SILS, Social Sciences, Japanese Language). Materials located in Science & Engineering Students’ Reading Room can be checked out.

*5 Library Card (Blue) holders, Affiliated Senior High School students, and Art & Architecture School students are not allowed to use the research lounge of WIHL.

The way to renew the due date

Maximum Days of Borrowing

Three times the regular loan period
e.g., for 14-days Loan, Maximum Renewal Period is 42 days
Renewal Period From the next day you borrow until three days after the due date (Up to once per day)

Overdue Penalties New rules from Sep.2nd, 2019

 Suspension of Privileges
(Overdue loan date)
If materials are not returned 4 days after the due date, library privileges will be suspended as follows:
– You will not be able to borrow new materials as long as the overdue materials remain unreturned.
– After returning materials, a one-day loan suspension will be made for every one-day delay (per item).
In this case, the maximum suspension period will be 30 days.
 Suspension of Privileges
(If overdue books are placed on hold by another user)
If another user places a hold on books that you have borrowed but that have not been returned by the due date, your library privileges will be suspended. You will not be able to borrow new materials as long as the overdue materials remain unreturned. Once overdue books are returned, your library privileges will be reinstated.
Suspension of Privileges
(Lost or damaged overdue books)
If you do not compensate for lost or damaged book/s within the designated time period, library privileges will be suspended until compensations are paid.
