Medical treatment for medical expenses

Treatment within the scope of the Medical Fee Reimbursement System

The Waseda University Student Health Promotion Mutual Aid Association shall reimburse medical fees for the following treatment.

1. Clinics

Treatment within the health insurance coverage received in contracted clinics/hospitals and other medical institutes (hospitals/general hospitals/clinics, etc.) within Japan authorized to treat patients with insurance coverage

2. Dental offices

Treatment within the health insurance coverage received in contracted dental offices and other medical institutes (hospitals/general hospitals/dental offices, etc.) within Japan authorized to treat patients with insurance coverage

3. Dispensing

Dispensing (medication) within the health insurance coverage received in contracted pharmacies and other dispensing pharmacies within Japan

4. Other

1) Treatment covered by insurance for emergency “fracture”/ “dislocation” and traumatic “sprain,” “bruise,” and “contusion” at an orthopedic clinic (osteopathic clinic)

*Doctor’s consent form is required for fracture/dislocation treatment.

2) Treatment covered by insurance for acupuncture/moxibustion/massage according to a doctor’s order (doctor’s consent form or medical certificate) for the following disorders if the symptoms do not improve although the patient has been seeking treatment from a hospital/clinic

 Acupuncture/moxibustion

  • a) For chronic disorders, mainly neuralgia, rheumatism, etc., with a disorder name the cervicobrachial syndrome, subacromial bursitis, lumbago, or cervical sprain sequela, the main symptom of which is chronic pain
  • b) Pain due to peripheral neurological disorder, lumber vertebrae hernia, paralysis, hypertension, etc., subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy involving pain (paresthesia)

Massage

  • a) Treatment for symptoms, such as “arthrogryposis,” “myoparalysis,” etc.

3) Therapeutic orthosis deemed necessary for treatment by a doctor

(Doctor’s certificate is required. Refer to “To apply for medical fee reimbursement” for the application method.)

–Corsets, casts, supporters, crutches if not available for rental, artificial eyes, artificial arms, artificial legs, etc. on doctors’ orders

*While therapeutic orthosis (with the doctor’s certificate) is normally covered by the patient in full, the Waseda University Student Health Promotion Mutual Aid Association shall reimburse 30% of the cost, from which 1,000 yen is deducted, up to the annual limit.

Example: If the price for crutches is 12,000 yen:
12,000 yen x 30% = 3,600 yen

3,600 yen – 1,000 yen = 2,600 yen
Reimbursed amount: 2,600 yen

Besides, individually inquire with the insurance union, as the other 70% may be reimbursed by your insurance union.

[Important] It has been determined that the treatment at an osteopathic clinic, treatment for acupuncture/moxibustion/massage and therapeutic orthosis deemed necessary for treatment by a doctor will be outside of the scope of the medical fee reimbursement system as of April 1st, 2022.

4) The application will be reviewed if a written explanation of the reason for the application (in any format) is received in addition to the regular application documents within the application deadline (*by the 10th day of the third month following the month of medical treatment).

If the application is approved, the applicant may be given 1/2 of the medical expense benefit, which is the amount equivalent to the normal insurance treatment (30%) minus the patient’s co-payment. Depending on the application details, half of the medical fee, in which the self coverage amount is deducted from the amount equivalent to the normal treatment covered by insurance (30%), may be reimbursed.

*Refer to “If you received treatment without bringing your insurance card.”

*All visits to overseas medical institutes and dispensing pharmacies shall be outside of the scope of the Medical Fee Reimbursement System by the Waseda University Student Health Promotion Mutual Aid Association.

In case of any inconsistency between the Japanese version and the English version, the Japanese version shall prevail.
