Exchange students for the English studies department have to proof English language skills level - TOEFL 72 or IELTS 6.0 - on undergraduate level. For Graduate students, the minimum level is TOEFL 95 or IELTS 7.0. For all other departments at least TOEFL 61 or IELTS 5.5 is required. (However, first language of instruction in these other departments is German - apart from a few English taught master programs in economics, political science, environmental sciences, and data science.)

Q17-2: Are there any restrictions regarding course requirements (e.g. programs not open to exchange students) or other specific information about the curriculum?
Students wishing to take courses from other departments/subjects than they study at Waseda University must ask for the lecturers allowance. We have no courses for “Doctor”/Phd students and cannot enroll students on Phd level. Nevertheless if students enroll here on Master´s level and take Master´s courses, they can of course work on their phd thesis here (no credits can be achieved however). On Bachelor level: We have had approx. 60 courses in English during the last academic (22) year (incl. winter- and summer semester) - nearly 40 of them in the English language department or language courses. On Master´s level: We´ve had approx. 160 courses taught in English (winter + summer semester) during the last academic year. Most of them in Economics, Environmental science and English linguistics and literature.

Q17-2: Are there any restrictions regarding course requirements (e.g. programs not open to exchange students) or other specific information about the curriculum?
Students wishing to take courses from other departments/subjects than they study at Waseda University must ask for the lecturers allowance. We have no courses for “Doctor”/Phd students and cannot enroll students on Phd level. Nevertheless if students enroll here on Master´s level and take Master´s courses, they can of course work on their phd thesis here (no credits can be achieved however).

  • 留学が必修となっている国際教養学部の学生は、学部の許可をとった上で応募してください。
    For SILS students participation in a year-long study abroad program is part of the general degree requirements.
    Therefore, you must consult with your School Office in advance if you wish to apply to a semester program(s).
  • 通年科目が設置されている学部に属する学生が春学期留学をする場合、 科目登録ができず、帰国後の秋学期の授業を受けられない可能性があります。
    その他、専門演習(ゼミ)の登録や履修ができない等、支障が出る可能性がありますので、 所属学部・研究科に問い合わせ、よく確認の上、出願して下さい。
    If your School has year-long programs, it is essential that you consult with your School Office before applying to a seminar program(s) as there will be a possibility that you may not be able to register for courses in the second (fall) semester and/or seminars (enshu, or so-called "zemi").

    Students on extension (encho-sei) who participate in semester programs are required to pay the full tuition and other academic fees set by their Schools instead of the reduced fees for students on extension.You should confirm details with your School Offices.
