科学技術は、その発展とともに社会における多様な機能的価値がますます高まり、社会生活のすみずみにまでより見える形で利用され、最先端の領域は森羅万象における未解明の領域を開拓し続けています。その一方で、今世紀に入っても解決すべき課題はたいへん多く、地球温暖化、生物多様性など深刻で解決が難しい課題、自然災害や都市災害など常に悩まされる課題、日常生活におけるさまざまな社会的課題など、その規模や場面は多岐にわたります。それらが人々に共有の課題として提示され、社会の仕組みを含めて改善の努力をするということが、現代社会においては明確に認識されています。

このような科学技術の価値と使命に対し、大学における研究は人間の知を支える大切な活動であり、豊かな社会と幸せな未来を築くために多大な貢献をなし続けています。膨大な専門分野を擁する早稲田大学理工学術院においても、国や省庁、民間との共同プロジェクト、個々の専門分野における新しい知見・技術の発見・開発など、多彩な研究活動が日々行われています。そこには、さまざまな目的をもつ実験室の運営、専門性の高い外部研究員の雇用など、研究活動にまつわる種々の業務も存在します。

本理工学術院総合研究所は、このような早稲田大学の理工系研究活動を支える附置研究所として、前身の理工学研究所以来80年余りの歴史があります。産学官連携や研究員雇用の窓口、プロジェクト研究および実験室の運営、各種の講演会・研究会の援助など、その役割は多く、理工学術院の全教員の研究活動をサポートすることが根本の使命となります。また、研究の器としての機能の他に、未来の科学技術を支える若手研究員の育成や、Waseda Vision 150に掲げられている早稲田大学の研究の基本方針への支援にも取り組んでおります。我々は、大学さらには社会に開かれた研究所として、科学技術を支える組織であり続けるよう努力してまいります。

As science and technology advance, their diverse functional value in society continues to grow. S&T’s applications in all aspects of our lives are becoming ever more visible. And cutting-edge fields built on S&T are opening new doors to unknown realms of the universe. On the other hand, even in this new century, many problems remain. They include serious and difficult-to-tackle issues such as global warming and biodiversity, problems that never cease to plague us, such as natural and urban disasters, and various social issues in daily life. All are presented as challenges that affect us all, and there is a clear recognition in today’s society that we must endeavor to make the necessary improvements, including reworking the social structure.

University research plays an important role in supporting human knowledge concerning S&T’s value and mission, contributing significantly to building a prosperous society and a happy future. Waseda University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering engages in such research in a vast array of specialized fields. We routinely conduct a diverse range of research activities. They include participating in joint projects with the national government, its ministries and agencies, and the private sector, and pursuing the discovery and development of new knowledge and technologies in individual areas of expertise. Moreover, we handle various tasks associated with research activity, including operating laboratories established for diverse purposes and employing highly specialized outside researchers.

The history of Waseda Research Institute for Science and Engineering as a Waseda University-affiliated research institute supporting science and engineering research stretches back more than 80 years to the birth of the Science and Engineering Research Laboratory. Our many roles include serving as a contact point for industry-academia-government collaboration and the employment of researchers, managing project research and laboratories, and assisting in various lectures and research meetings. Our fundamental mission is to support the research activities of all faculty members and instructors. In addition to functioning as a reservoir of research, we foster young researchers who will drive S&T in the future and support the basic policies of Waseda University research outlined in Waseda Vision 150. As a research institute open to the university and society, we remain committed to furthering science and technology.
