Grades and GPA

There are 5 levels of differentiated grades: A+, A, B, C and F.  A+, A, B and C are Pass; F is Failure.
Repeated enrollment in the same course in the following terms is permitted for students if they receive F for their grade in that course.

“*”: Evaluation not yet completed at the time the grades are issued, or the transferred Course.

GPA is calculated based on grades for all GSAPS courses registered and credits earned from all other courses that can count towards graduation, EXCEPT all “Non-credit courses”.

  • Grade Point: A+: 4.0, A: 3.0, B: 2.0, C: 1.0, F: 0.0
  • GPA is computed as follows (rourd off to two decimal places)

A+ Credit Number (CN) × 4.0 + A CN × 3.0+B CN× 2.0+C CN × 1.0+F CN × 0.0
Total Credit Number Registered

Grades are given in the “Grade Report”, which is the students’ personal record on the “MyWaseda” website.
“Transcript of Academic Record” and “Transcript of Academic Record / GPA” are official documents that can be used for job application, admission to schools of higher education, etc. Only “Pass”grades are indicated (GPA is not indicated on “Transcript of Academic Record”).
All grades as an object of GPA (including “Fail”grades) and GPA are indicated on “Transcript of Academic Record / GPA”.

GSAPS Highest Honor List

GSAPS honors students who complete with high grades in each term.
Students who take 5 or more courses including intensive courses (except Project Research/ Non-credit courses) are eligible for the “Highest Honor List”.

Credit Transfer

Courses taken at other graduate schools at Waseda as current students are automatically counted towards completion.
There is no need to apply for transfer. Click here for more details.

Courses Taken Before Admission

It is possible to transfer courses already obtained from the GSAPS, other graduate schools of Waseda University, other universities in Japan or abroad into the GSAPS transcript upon approval.  Students who wish to transfer their courses should submit the necessary documents before the designated deadline after enrollment so that they may be examined for similarities to the classes of the GSAPS by the committee meeting.

*For courses taken at other graduate schools, you are required to upload the following documents at the time of application . Please prepare in advance.

  1. Course guide/Syllabus that includes information listed below.
    a. Course details b. Course hours (highlight the given section by yourself)
    *Make sure it includes the total course hours (Ex. = 90 mins (class hours) × 15 (times) + official outside-class hours if any).
    You may include outside-class hours dedicated to the class if it is mentioned in official documentations. Please upload them together with other necessary documents.
  2. Transcript
  3. Grading criteria(Ex. A+=100-90, A=89-80, B=79-70, C=69-60)

Check notification on MyWaseda/Waseda mail.

Remarks

  • You cannot use the same transcript you submitted at the time of admission.
  • No more than a total of 10 credits can be transferred from other graduate schools at Waseda University, study abroad or other credits earned from other graduate schools after the student entered the GSAPS.
  • There is no assurance that the transfer of the applied courses would be approved by GSAPS.  Therefore, it is recommended that one should register for courses equivalent to the number of credits you wish to transfer by completing the online course registration during the course registration period.
  • 30 hours are calculated into 2 credits (maximum).
