Japanese Government Scholarship Opportunities

1.GSAPS Nomination

Waseda University Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies International Relations Program was selected for the International Priority Graduate Program (PGP) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The PGP program, which was created by MEXT to support programs which have international appeal to foreign students, provides priority allocation for government financed foreign students. The Program will continue from 2021 to 2023. A detailed outline of the selected program and the application procedure are as follows.

Program “Building Global Governance Capacity to Achieve SDGs: An Asian-European Inter-regional Training Program”
Number of Students Approx. 6 for MA program and 2 for Ph.D. program
Application Period January 24 (Monday) – February 2 (Wednesday), 2022
<Deadline of Online submission:23:59 of February 2, 2022 (JST), Postal mail has to be dispatched to the office by February 2, 2022 (JST). *Postmark on this date is acceptable.>
  • Applicants’ basic information must be filled out through the Online Application System (available from January 24, 2022) during the above application period.
  • Necessary hard-copy documents have to be dispatched to the GSAPS Admissions Office by the deadline of the above application period.
  • Screening fee must be paid within the above application period.
    However,  screening fee will be waived in some cases. For more details, please refer to the application guide.

*Regarding the “NOTE c.” on the page 9

As to “c. Those who have received a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship in the past will not be selected unless they have at least three years of research or teaching experience after completion of the first scholarship.” indicated on the page 9 (for both MA & Ph.D.), work experience other than research and teaching can be acceptable. If you falls into this case, please contact our Admissions Office in advance of application.

2.Embassy Nomination

An embassy recommended, government sponsored international student is a student who applies to receive a government scholarship through the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country. Please refer to CIE (Center of International Education, Waseda University) Website.

Students should apply for the scholarship at the Japanese embassy or consulate. The Embassy or consulate select students through document screening, examination and interviews. Please contact the Japanese embassy or consulate for further details.

3.Domestic Selection

This is the government sponsored scholarship for private financed international students who are enrolled as regular degree-seeking students at Waseda University. This scholarship will apply only AFTER matriculation.
