Abstract
Linguistic research is, on a fundamental level, an inquiry to how a language works. The result of the inquiry is supposed to feed into the pedagogical material designed to teach that language. However, as data analyses become sophisticated and complex, involving more and more linguistics concepts and theoretical terminology, how to apply research results to pedagogy consequently become a contested issue. Some argue that linguistic jargon should be avoided in language textbooks as it often confuses language learners and distracts them from actual learning with unnecessary new terminology. I argue in this brief presentation with a case study of a group of Chinese adverbs that linguistic concepts and terminology, when clearly presented and explained, are really a pedagogical necessity rather than a hindrance to learning.
Mandarin Chinese employs a unique group of adverbs to express the speaker’s attitude towards the utterance, which is usually done by intonation in other languages. These adverbs are frequently used in colloquial contexts; however, they are generally ignored in the field of Mandarin teaching including research on their usage, introduction of such usage in textbooks, and their actual teaching in the classroom. Occasionally, a textbook would attempt to cover a particular attitudinal usage but, more often than not, misses the mark. This talk surveys the most popular and reputable textbook used at the intermediate and advanced levels in North America and evaluates their handling of this class of adverbs. With examples of these attitudinal adverbs, I argue that, if a linguistic concept is crucial in the target language, even though it is entirely novel in the learner’s native language, we should teach it in a clear and straightforward manner. This talk will also provide similar cases from Tibetan, my other research area, reaffirming that linguistic research should and can feed into pedagogy.

Prof. Kuo-ming Sung (宋國明) received his BA in Foreign Languages and English Literature from National Taiwan University in 1984 and PhD in Romance Linguistics from University of California, Los Angeles, in 1994.  He joined Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1994 and teaches Chinese and Linguistics since. He is currently Wendy and KK Tse Professor of East Asian Studies and Professor of Chinese and Linguistics at Lawrence.  His research area includes theoretical syntax focusing on Romance and East Asian languages as well as pedagogical grammars of Tibetan and Mandarin Chinese. His publications include Introduction to Syntactic Theories (1997, Chinese Social Sciences Press, three editions), Colloquial Amdo Tibetan (2005, China Tibetology Publishing House, coauthored with Lha Byams Rgyal), Drolmas of Shinaihai (2008, Chinese Social Sciences Press), Amdo Tibetan—A Complete Grammar Textbook (2021, Routledge, coauthored with Lha Byams Rgyal ), A Reference Grammar for Teaching Chinese (2021, Springer Nature, coauthored with Songren Cui) and a number of articles on linguistics and language pedagogy. The Chinese revised version of his Amdo Tibetan textbook is in print, to be available later this year.
