Waseda University History Museum Special Exhibition
Waseda University and Peking University 1882-1921 Pioneers of Modern China who studied at Waseda
Waseda University's predecessor was Tokyo Senmon Gakko, founded in 1882, while China's Peking University originated from the University of Beijing, founded in 1898. Both universities were founded at a time when Japan and China were both seeking to reinvent themselves into the modern era.
Waseda University and Peking University have a long history of exchange, and the two schools have had connections through people since 1905, when Waseda University established the Qing Dynasty Student Department, an educational institution for Chinese students.
This exhibition will explore the history of friendship between Waseda University and Peking University from three perspectives: the views of China of Waseda students such as Okuma Shigenobu, the education of the Qing Dynasty International Student Division, and people who studied at Waseda in the early 20th century and were involved in the modernization of China and the establishment and development of Peking University (Song Jiaoren, Li Dazhao, Qian Xuantong, Zhu Xizu, Tang Zengbi, etc.). In addition, we will introduce valuable materials on Chinese revolutionaries and reformers from the Waseda University collection, such as letters from Sun Yat-sen addressed to Okuma, graduation albums from Zhu Xizu and others, and the graduation commemorative book "Hongjicho" written by Tang Zengbi and others.
