Student Compensation System(Liability Coverage)

Reimbursement target

This system is available to those who meet any of the following criteria.

  1. Regular Students of Waseda University
  2. Non-degree Students of Waseda University
  3. Research Students of Waseda University
  4. Special Research Students of Waseda University
  5. Exchange Students of Waseda University
  6. Students of Japanese Language Program, Waseda University
  7. JSPS DC Research Fellowships (PD) accepted at Waseda University

*Students on leave of absence or studying abroad may be eligible depending on the circumstances of the accident.

This shall be applicable to internship/practice teaching/volunteer activities approved by the university and regular curriculum (only external laboratory work/field work). Accidents during transportation from/to the activity location, such as during commuting and between facilities, shall be outside of the scope of Student Compensation System (Liability Coverage). The applicable period of the system shall be the duration of the activities for which an application was filed.

Internship

For students to perform work experience in companies, etc. related to their own major or future career.

Teaching Practice

  1. Teaching Practice: For students to perform activities required to obtain the teacher’s certificate in the hosting kindergarten/elementary school/junior high school/high school with subjects applicable to “Teaching Practice”.
  2. Nursing care experience: For students, who wish to obtain the regular license for elementary school/junior high school teacher, to perform nursing care experience, etc.

Volunteer activities

To perform activities to contribute to society with the ability, effort, or asset possessed by an individual of their own free will.

Regular curriculum

Off-campus laboratory work/field work only.

Accident cases that fall within the scope of compensation

  1. I spilled coffee on a PC where I was dispatched to during my internship and broke the PC.
  2. I injured the person I was helping during my volunteer activities.
  3. I was playing soccer with elementary students where I was doing practice teaching. The ball hit a student’s eye and injured the student.
  4. I mixed chemicals by mistake in field work off campus during my regular curriculum activities and caused an explosion. I broke the equipment I was using.

Accident cases that do not fall within the scope of compensation

  • Accidents by the intention of the insured party
  • Accidents due to insanity of the insured party
  • Accidents caused by possession/use/management of motorcycles/automobiles/elevators/aircraft/ships/vehicles/animals
  • Accidents due to war/disturbance/uprising/rioting/labor dispute
  • Accidents due to earthquake/volcanic eruption/tsunami
  • Liability accident weighed by a special contract regarding damage compensation concluded between the insured party and a third party
  • Liability for the damage itself of the product or work object caused by the fault of the product or work
  • Accidents due to waste water/exhaust gas
  • Damage/loss/theft, etc. of bicycles/motorcycles/automobiles/aircraft/ships/vehicles/animals/musical instruments/bills/securities/artworks/designs/similar commissioned objects

Compensation amount

Compensation against people/objects: Maximum of 100 million yen per accident (Deductible: 0 yen)

The paid compensation is determined based on the percentage of fault of the victim and the percentage of responsibility by others.

  • Even if damage compensation is paid to 2 or more people, the maximum of the total paid amount from the insurance shall be 100 million yen.
  • If the paid amount to the victim exceeds 100 million yen, the excess amount shall be paid by the student himself/herself.
  • In liability accidents, it is rare that the party at fault bears 100% of the fault. Some accidents involve faults of the victim himself/herself, and some are inevitable accidents. Please thoroughly consult with the insurance company in advance when negotiating.
    In addition, negotiations shall be performed by the insured person (student themself), who is the party at fault.

Student Compensation System(Compensation for Injury)

This compensation system was established to reduce the financial burden of medical fees, etc. in case students suffer disasters, such as injury, physical impediment, and death, due to unexpected accidents during educational/research activities. This is not insurance.

Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research

This was the insurance we had been using until the Student Compensation System(Compensation for Injury) started. Accidents to which the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research is applicable are those up to March 31, 2011.

Student Comprehensive Mutual Insurance (voluntary insurance)

This insurance is offered by the Waseda University Cooperative Association (CO-OP). This insurance system is for the student’s own illness/injury. This offers compensation for your student life whether inside or outside of Japan 24/7 at a small premium.

Personal Liability Insurance (voluntary insurance)

This insurance is offered by the Waseda University Cooperative Association (CO-OP). This covers the amount of compensation in case of damage to others during your school life.

Comprehensive Security Insurance (Student Security Plan) (voluntary insurance)

This is an inexpensive compensation system jointly developed by Waseda University Campus Insurance Center Co., Ltd. and a major casualty insurance company, fully utilizing the group discount. This system offers comprehensive compensation for risks not only during regular curriculum but also in daily life.

Comprehensive Security Insurance (Guardian Income Security Plan) (voluntary insurance)

This insurance is offered by Waseda University Campus Insurance Center Co., Ltd. It compensates part of student tuition/living cost in case his/her guardian (supporter) can no longer work due to injury or illness.

In case of any inconsistency between the Japanese version and the English version, the Japanese version shall prevail.
