Research Summary
Our institute is dedicated to exploring opera as a dynamic, interdisciplinary art form with global reach. Centered on the theme World Perspectives on Opera and Music Theatre: Its History and Prospects, our research engages with four key areas that reflect both historical depth and contemporary relevance:
The Future of the Opera House
Opera houses today face the challenge of remaining artistically vibrant and socially responsive. We examine how these institutions can evolve—through new works, reinterpretations of classics, and inclusive programming—to meet the needs of diverse audiences and ensure a sustainable future.
Opera and Literature
Opera transforms literary texts into living performance. Our research investigates how stories, myths, and poetic forms are adapted and reimagined in operatic contexts, focusing on creative collaboration, cultural translation, and the expressive power of music and language.
Opera and Dance
Ballet emerged as part of a unified artistic expression within early modern court culture, where music, movement, and spectacle were seamlessly integrated. While it has since developed into a globally recognized form of theatrical performance. This research project reconsiders dance as a vital branch of operatic art in its broadest sense. Under the theme “Opera and Dance,” we examine dance and revue as forms of stage performance, tracing how their modes of presentation have transformed across historical periods.
Opera and Media
From handwritten scores to digital archives, media have always shaped how opera is recorded, transmitted, and remembered. We study the evolving role of media in preserving and sharing opera, opening new pathways for research into its reception, accessibility, and cultural legacy.
