On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Waseda University, in co-sponsorship with LOTTE Co., Ltd., successfully hosted the “2025 Waseda-Loughborough Joint Symposium,” welcoming researchers and graduate students from Loughborough University, a leading university in the UK (ranked number 1 in the world for sports-related subjects for the last nine years in the QS World University Rankings by Subject). The event provided a valuable opportunity to share the latest research findings across various fields of sport sciences and to deepen international academic exchange.
2025年10月1日（水）、早稲田大学スポーツ科学学術院は、英国のトップ大学であるラフバラ大学（9年連続でQS世界大学ランキングスポーツ関連分野で1位）から研究者・大学院生を迎え、株式会社ロッテとの共催で「2025 Waseda-Loughborough Joint Symposium」を盛大に開催しました。スポーツ科学の多岐にわたる最新の研究成果を共有し、国際的な学術交流を深める貴重な機会となりました。

The symposium began with intensive sessions led by leading researchers at the forefront of sport sciences. Researchers from Loughborough University, including Professor Katherine Brooke-Wavell, Dr. Gareth Wiltshire, and Dr. Thomas Randell-Clifford, presented their latest findings. The day reaffirmed the importance of international research exchange.
午前の部から、スポーツ科学の最前線を走る研究者による密度の濃いセッションが展開されました。ラフバラ大学からは、Katherine Brooke-Wavell教授、Gareth Wiltshire博士、Thomas Randell-Clifford博士らが来日し、最新の研究知見を紹介。国際的な研究交流の重要性を改めて印象づける一日となりました。
Session 1: Sports Sociology/セッション1：スポーツ社会学
Dr. Gareth Wiltshire presented on “Sport and exercise for organ transplant recipients: A sociological perspective.”
Professor Atsushi Nakazawa of Waseda University delivered a lecture on “Sports and education in Japanese society: Why do teachers become coaches?”
Gareth Wiltshire博士は、「Sport and exercise for organ transplant recipients: A sociological perspective（臓器移植を受けた患者のスポーツ・運動：社会学的視点）」について発表しました 。
早稲田大学の中澤 篤史 教授は、「Sports and education in Japanese society: Why do teachers become coaches?（日本社会におけるスポーツと教育：なぜ教員はコーチになるのか？）」というテーマで講演しました 。
Session 2: Exercise Nutrition/Physiology / セッション2：運動栄養学・生理学
Dr. Thomas Randell-Clifford delivered a presentation titled, “Exercise and dietary (poly)phenols: Effects on nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) activation in humans.”
Dr. Hayato Tsukamoto presented on the “Coordinated responses of executive function and dynamic cerebral autoregulation to modifiable behaviors.”
Dr. Thomas Randell-Cliffordは、「Exercise and dietary (poly)phenols: Effects on nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) activation in humans（運動と食事由来の（ポリ）フェノール：ヒトにおけるNF-E2関連因子2（NRF2）活性化への影響）というテーマで講演しました 。
塚本 敏人 講師からは、「Coordinated responses of executive function and dynamic cerebral autoregulation to modifiable behaviors（修正可能な行動に対する実行機能と動的脳血流自己調節の協調的応答）」に関する発表が行われました 。
Session 5: Skeletal Health/Nutrition / セッション5：骨の健康・栄養
Professor Katherine Brooke-Wavell spoke on the theme of “The role of exercise in prevention of osteoporosis.”
Professor Motoko Taguchi of Waseda University shared insights on the “Prevention and early detection of energy deficiency in free-living athletes: From research to field application.”
Katherine Brooke-Wavell教授は、「The role of exercise in prevention of osteoporosis（骨粗鬆症の予防における運動の役割）」をテーマに講演しました 。
早稲田大学の田口 素子 教授は、「Prevention and early detection of energy deficiency in free-living athletes: From research to field application（一般アスリートのエネルギー不足の予防と早期発見：研究から現場応用まで）」の知見を共有しました。
Oral and Poster Presentations by Students / 学生による口頭・ポスター発表
The symposium also featured lively oral presentations (Session 3) and a poster session (Session 4) with active participation from graduate students of both universities. Students, including Jiajin Li and Zhuoyue Zhang from Loughborough University, and Ena Yoshida and Koki Tanaka from Waseda University, presented their research findings in English, followed by enthusiastic Q&A sessions. This provided a valuable opportunity for these future researchers to cultivate an international perspective.
本シンポジウムでは、若手研究者の育成と国際交流も重要な柱と位置づけられています。両大学の大学院生による口頭発表（Session 3）とポスターセッション（Session 4）も活発に行われました 。ラフバラ大学のJiajin Liさん、Zhuoyue Zhangさん、早稲田大学の吉田 恵菜さん、田中 航希さん を含む学生たちが日頃の研究成果を英語で発表し、熱心な質疑応答が交わされました。これは、未来の研究者が国際的な視点を養う貴重な機会となりました。
Summary and Closing / 総括と閉会
After all sessions concluded, Dr. Norimasa Sakanoshita of the “Chewing” PR Section, Corporate Communication Department at our co-sponsor, LOTTE Co., Ltd., delivered remarks. He offered warm congratulations, celebrating the success of the day’s enthusiastic discussions and international exchange. Positive expectations were expressed for the future of sport sciences and its potential to contribute to people’s healthy lives, highlighting the symposium’s success in a friendly atmosphere. Following this, Professor David Stensel of Loughborough University delivered the closing remarks, bringing the international academic symposium to a successful conclusion.
すべてのセッションが終了すると、まずはご協賛いただいた株式会社ロッテ 広報部 噛むことPR課 坂ノ下 典正様よりご挨拶をいただきました。終日の熱心な議論と国際的な交流の成功を祝い、温かみにあふれた祝辞を頂戴しました。スポーツ科学の未来と、それが人々の健やかな生活にもたらす可能性について、前向きな期待が述べられ、和やかな雰囲気の中でシンポジウムの成功を印象づけました。続いて、ラフバラ大学のDavid Stensel教授からの閉会コメントをもって、国際的な学術議論は成功裏に締めくくられました。
This symposium was a great success, providing a valuable platform for sharing cutting-edge knowledge in sport sciences and further strengthening the research exchange between Waseda University and Loughborough University.
