The SILS Art Project 2026 will feature one of the timeless classics of ancient greek tragedy: Sophocles, Antigone. Through the various views expressed by its characters, the work explores the timeless collision between the absolute decrees of the state and the unwritten, immutable laws of the human heart.

For this project, the play will be performed in English by Waseda University students selected through an open call on campus. They will bring new life to this classic.

After the performance, an English-language workshop will be held. The workshop will offer deeper insights into the characters’ perspectives, thoughts, and the cultural background of the work. We are honoured to welcome distinguished guest speakers: Harue Yamagata (Nihon University), widely renowned for translating the scripts of Greek tragedies directed by Yukio Ninagawa, and Katsuya Akitomi (Kyoto Institute of Technology), a leading expert on Martin Heidegger’s interpretations of Greek tragedy.

Both the performance and the workshop will include Japanese translation, so those who are not confident in English can also participate comfortably.

We warmly welcome students, faculty, staff, and members of the public interested in literature, philosophy, and theater. Join us for a stimulating and memorable experience!
