  • Title: Can we conceive the future? A phenomenological approach to the ‘unprethinkable’
  • Day and Time: June 15, 2023    5:00pm-
  • Abstract:

Lockdown, wars, earthquakes, floods, climate change…, unpredictable events constantly emerge in the world in which we live.
Could someone predict our future? Could we hope to conceive it? Or is what we imagine as the future simply a facsimile of the present state of things to which we add some modifications? Is the future a variant of the present modelled on the present?
We estimate the future locations and movement of the planets from their orbits. All we can do, however, is refer to the data we gather in our perception, combining them through our imagination and putting them under certain concepts that we establish through laws of logic and nature.
What will happen when a new law of nature, unknown to us today, is discovered in the future?
This seminar invites participants to explore the question of whether it is possible to conceive the future from the point of view of phenomenology as transcendental idealism.
