This presentation looks back to the first imaginings of an “Asian cinema” in the 1930s, tracking the concept through the postwar to the present day. It finally pays close attention to the explosive growth of the film industry in the People’s Republic of China. How does thinking of Chinese cinema as Asian cinema change our perspective on both terms?
