Shaping the Future of the Global Circular Economy: the EU’s Digital Product Passport Regulation
(Conducted in Japanese)
Abstract
The EU will introduce the Digital Product Passport (DPP) regulation in 2027 as a key initiative to promote the Circular Economy and facilitate sustainable product distribution. By utilizing blockchain technology, product lifecycle information will be recorded and shared in an immutable digital format, ensuring transparency and reliability.
The regulation will initially apply to batteries, electronic/electric devices, and textiles, with plans for gradual expansion to other product categories. This initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing traceability, improving resource efficiency, and fostering a more sustainable production and consumption system.
While this regulation is expected to serve as an application of digital technology to support sustainability, its efficiency can be realized when consumers recognize the significance of the provided information and incorporate it into their daily lives.
This presentation will provide an overview of the DPP framework and introduce a collaborative research project with researchers from Aalborg University Copenhagen in Denmark.
